Object-Oriented ActionScript for Flash 8
25 01 2006I’m very happy to announce “Object-Oriented ActionScript for Flash 8” is finally done and going to the printers. This was definitely one of the biggest book projects I’ve worked on and must say it turned out great. With the help of contributing authors Todd Yard and Sas Jacobs (and the original work of William Drol) we covered tons of information you rarely find in ActionScript books.
Some of my personal highlights are:
- implementing design patterns
- an introduction to version control
- animation and effects classes
- communicating between Flash and the browser
Not to mention detailed chapters on project planning, creating a custom component framework, data binding, XML and web services. And that’s all on top of a great down to earth discussion of object-oriented principles and how to apply those to your ActionScript 2.0 code. Oh, and there’s a foreword by none other than Aral Balkan.
I’m of course totally unbiased, and with just over 500 pages of ActionScript 2.0 goodness I’d buy myself a copy of the book were it not that I’ll be getting quite a few author copies soon
The book should be hitting stores in a couple of weeks, but you can pre-order it now!
[update] Friends of ED now has a sample chapter up with some extracts from the chapter on inheritance and oop animation and effects.

Hi Peter,
The first book by Bill Drol was a great reading to learn about the old AS1 OOP. I hope to enjoy this new one as the old one

I had been searching for a title like this for sometime now.Let me see FOE..Thanks for that!
Any news on when this thing actually hits Amazon shelves? I’ve preordered from amazon.com about 2 weeks ago and all I see is that the date is being pushed back all the time. I can’t say that I’m happy about that fact.
Hi Jarek, the book went to the printers on January 25th — that takes a couple of weeks, I expect it to be available shortly after that, so near the end of the month.
I believe the Amazon shipping date said February 13th when the book went to the printers and it now says February 15th. That’s probably a little too optimistic, should have my author copies before I head out to webDU on the 25th so expect you won’t need to wait much longer.
Woohoo, I’ve already pointed some people to your book!
Thanks bro, I’ll have a copy waiting for you
