OO AS for Flash 8 – Going into reprint!

March 30th, 2006

Its just over a month since the book was first published and was informed that “Object-Oriented ActionScript for Flash 8” is already planned for a reprint.

Thanks to everyone who’s been sending in feedback, its great to see so many people enjoyed the book and even see it as an ideal hands-on accompaniment to Colin Moock’s infamous “Essential ActionScript 2.0” book.

With the reprint in mind, if you have any possible errata to report please get in touch as soon as possible!

Ultrashock.com is celebrating its 5 year anniversary with a contest including a grand prize of a 60Gb video iPod. Additionally they’ve launched a new series of articles on Flash 8, Photoshop and Illustrator well worth a read!

I’ve contributed an article on new features in Flash 8, giving a quick overview changes that should hopefully persuade you to upgrade if you haven’t done so by now.

URL in a File Browse Dialog

Just a little something I discovered by accident and can make life a lot easier. When you’ve got a browse to file dialog open in the Flash IDE you can just type in a URL and it will load that in for you.

In the past when working with the XMLConnector component I would download a copy of the XML file I’m using just to load in the schema in the Component Inspector. Rather than doing that you can have it point to an online resource.

The same goes for any file browse dialog: open, import, run command etc.

Easy, no? :)

The Adobe MAX conference 2006, sounds strange doesn’t it … In any case, happy to hear it survived the acquisition and the next edition is planned for October 22nd till the 26th in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Nice to finally have an excuse to head over there, keeping my agenda open and should hopefully be able to make it. More information will probably be posted in the coming days/weeks.

Satori’s review of OO AS for Flash 8

March 17th, 2006

Pete from Friends of ED just forwarded me a link to Satori’s review of “Object-Oriented Actionscript for Flash 8“. Its a really great read, have been eager to get feedback from the Flash community on the book ever since it was published.

Describing the book as a practical guide is probably one of the biggest compliments we could get. If I had one goal with the chapters I’ve written is make OOP concepts in ActionScript approachable for the average Flash developer and demystify things like design patterns.

Obviously couldn’t have done it without the fantastic work of co-authors Todd Yard, Sas Jacobs and Bill Drol!

… there is nothing suspicious about a one-day business trip to Vancouver, shame it took you close to two hours realize that.
