Getting into Flash Lite 2.1
17 01 2007Finally got myself a new phone and am absolutely loving the Nokia N70 — its quite a change from my old Sony Ericsson K300i, not in the least because it supports Flash Lite 2.1 of course
I’m generally more of a Sony Ericsson enthousiast but their walkman series wasn’t exactly what I needed, next on my list was the Nokia N80 - which I had seen in action and is a very impressive indeed - in the end decided that WiFi functionality wasn’t worth the premium for me. I usually travel with my laptop anyway and it turned out to be double the price of the deal I could get for an N70.
With Total Training having just released a new training title by Dale Rankine on Flash Lite 2.1 development I look forward to finally getting involved with that. To be honest it was Richard’s session at Flash on the Beach last December that convinced me to get a S60 phone. Unlike some other people I’ve talked to who are a little less optimistic, I see a real market emerging for Flash based content on the phone — especially if we can possible work towards mobile/desktop convergence with Apollo.

Does anyone have any further links for getting into Flash Lite 2.1 development?

Peter, I’m sure you’re already aware of our book, given that you went to Richard’s presentation at FoTB.
However, for those of you just starting out with Flash Lite, there’s also our book (which covers 1.1 and 2.X):
Foundation Flash Applications for Mobile Devices
Weyert de Boer, Scott Janousek, Richard Leggett
Publisher: friends of ED
ISBN:1590595580
536 Pages
For more information about the book, you can check out:

Peter,
How do you find the Total Training DVDs? I’m looking at their Flex course, but would love to hear from someone who’s used the products before.
Any thoughts?
Thanks Alessandro, Scott — looking forward to reading the book!
@Frank - I actually did a review of their Flex title and absolutely loved it. Think its one of the best ways to get started with Flex 2. Think James Talbot did an outstanding job on it.

Hope to review their Flash Lite training DVD one of the coming weeks.
Peter,
Awesome… I’ll give your post a read. I’m glad to see you found it helpful. It makes spending the money much easier..
Hi Peter,
do you think the N73 is a good equipment to kid around with Flash Lite?
When will you pay us a visit at LFPUG in London?
Thks
hey Paulo — I’m still a bit of a newbie when it comes to Flash Lite, but not sure if the N73 supports Flash Lite 2.1. Its not listed in the supported devices section on the Adobe website in any case.

Would love to come over to the LFPUG some time soon, have been talking to Tink but never got round to it.
Hey Peter: I’ve installed Flash Lite 2.1 on my N80 but haven’t had any luck running flash apps authored as Flash Lite 2 as opposed to 1.1 swf’s running fine.
Anything your seeing that needs tweeking.
Thanks for any thoughts*
Flash Lite 2.1 works great on the N73.
simply speaking flashlite 2.1 when installed additionally, *.swf are not automatically assigned to it, you will have to start flashplayer and then navigate to the file in order to run it , and yes flashlite 2.1 is supported on n73 but not natively ( means browser integration, flash screen savers etc… are not supported ), and on n95 its natively supported.
