MacBook Pro power adaptor… not again!

29 09 2007

power adaptor burning

Just half an hour before I need to head out to the airport and what do I see? My MacBook Pro power adaptor is at it again — what the heck is wrong with these things? Last time it burned through at the magsafe connector, this time its happening at the base.

First stop in Chicago will be by the Apple store getting another piece of expensive hardware that will probably last me just a few months.

Just have to hope it doesn’t burn down the house next time round.

I had the exact same thing happen to me a few weeks back. Main cause seems to be just wrapping the cable around the brick, not the expandable corners it has for this.

Bad thing is, this is not covered by the warranty (at least it wasn’t for me). But i fixed it by cutting into that gray plastic neck, re-soldering cables together, and using heat shrink sleeving to fix it in place again (now better positioned for wrapping the cable).

This happened to me, too, and not only have I never wrapped the cable around anything but the clips designed for that purpose, I almost never move the damn thing. I have one for the office and one for home, and only travel occasionally. Poor quality, I’m afraid.

yup, same exact thing happened here! yeah, and I like how Apple was like, “well, were you in the Protection Plan?” ugh no… but these could start people houses on fire! I think that goes slightly beyond the protection plan. And they price their adapters to high too! that’s how they get ya, because you HAVE to have one, or else you run out of juice.

I have to say, I’m a big fan of Apple, but there’s a few things they do and try to cover up that I’m not such a big fan of… (like the random shutdown problem about a year ago, which I also had)

whatever
