After doing the Flashforward, MAX Chicago and MAX Barcelona conferences just in the last two months — I almost decided against going to this years edition of Flash on the Beach in Brighton.
Luckily that temporary loss of sanity soon made way and I will indeed make it to one of the very best Flash conferences out there. John Davey did an amazing job last year and I’m sure this year will be even better. The FOTB parties are legendary and with Guy Fawkes night on the Monday it promises to be spectacular.
I’m not speaking this year so should have lots of time to hang out with friends and colleagues and make the most of this last conference of 2007.
For those of you that attended the conference and are interested in my slides for the Adobe MAX Chicago and MAX Barcelona conferences — you can now access them from the website (login with your registration details).
Starting early November Flex Builder 2 will be offered free of charge to students and faculty members. While they could technically already use the free SDK and the command line compiler with their favorite code editor, it makes perfect sense to make their prospective customer base familiar with the IDE of choice for Flex development and get them involved in shaping the future of the software.
In the last few years I’ve gotten to know some really exceptional local Flash and Flex talent here in Belgium and I’m very pleased to hear that getting hold of Flex Builder won’t be a barrier for these students. Good move Adobe!
We’re very happy to have Mike Chambers and Lee Brimelow over at our AUG Belgium on November 12th as part of their European AIR user group tour. If you want to attend, make sure you register soon as we’re going to fill up in the next day or two the way things are going.

Google just made my day by introducing IMAP support in Gmail — it might not be a big deal for some but I like the idea of having access to my mailbox on my different machines directly from my mail client rather than having to go to gmail.com or download all mail via POP3 to every computer.
From what I hear not everyone has access to this feature yet but it should be coming soon to a mailbox near you!
The evidence is out there for everyone to see — what else could you expect from the rogue Boulevart guys. Adobe employees and community leaders in various states of sobriety.
I’m surprised a lot of them remembered their job title let alone were still able to pronounce it.
I’ll just keep a low profile in case any footage of myself is still sitting around on someone’s hard drive. Safe to say MAX Barcelona was a huge success!
Having been to both the Chicago and Barcelona editions of Adobe MAX, I thought it might be worth in doing a little comparison of the two in terms of location, sessions, party etc.
I unfortunately didn’t have the chance to do detailed reviews for each of the sessions I attended at MAX Barcelona (15 minute breaks between sessions just isn’t enough) but here is a list of the sessions I attended and a mini-review for each.
There’s been a lot of buzz around Thermo, a new tool in the Flex family that allows you to create working applications, including interaction and dummy data, from your designs without writing a line of code. Especially the ability to convert artwork to controls is very impressive.
Mark Anders gave us a nice demo of the software during the second day keynote at MAX Barcelona.
Ted Patrick showed us what to expect for Flex 3 during the first day MAX Barcelona keynote including a profiler, language intelligence, advanced data visualization and framework caching.
Flex Builder 3 is in beta and available for free download from labs.adobe.com — be sure to give it a try, it looks very promising!
