In the meanwhile Steve Jobs has announced that third party apps will be allowed and an SDK is coming in February. They're still working on improving security, working out ways of signing apps etc. There are multiple apps that customize the interface so I would not be surprised if there is something out there that allows you to remove buttons or that trash can feature you talk about.
