Hi,

I think that YouTube has closed the get_video.php ability to dowload the .flv for streaming since is was an "illigal" way to use their videos.

Has there been any thoughts about alternatives yet?

I'd like to know :)

Thanks Peter, you're right I tried a different video in your player and it worked fine. My problems happen when running the swf locally during development. All the debug messages relate to the sandbox but why its suddenly happening I don't know. Some posts in the youtube-api-gdata group suggest some recent changes to the api so maybe related. Anyway if I access my app from the localhost webserver it is fine so at least can work around until I get to the bottom of it.

Hi,

I am working on a new kind of VideoPlayer (like the IPod), actually its the Social IPod, it allows you synchronize youtube with your IPod (with powerfull filters) and you can write comments on your IPod and they are sent automatically on the sync, you can share video with a bluetooth connection with other SocialIPod, etc etc

For the moment I am looking for AIR/Flex dev to build the software (so in AIR), Is there any volunter???

Hi Phil, it still seems to be working for me -- can't guarantee they might have some videos up where this method of getting the FLV does not work.

Now of course there is no real reason to stick with my code since YouTube has released an official API you can use:

I did some experimental project based on this post. I've been working at it on and off for a while now and today when I fired it up, it no longer works. I tried your example above and it also fails. So I'm wondering if youtube have changed things to prevent this working? I'm now going to have a go with the chromeless player but I really liked this method.

Take YouTube Videos with you

YouTubeRobot.com today announces YouTube Robot 2.0, a tool that enables you to download video from YouTube.com onto your PC, convert it to various formats to watch it when you are on the road on mobile devices like mobile phone, iPod, iPhone, Pocket PC, PSP, or Zune.

YouTube Robot allows you to search for videos using keywords or browse video by category, author, channel, language, tags, etc. When you find something noteworthy, you can preview the video right in YouTube Robot and then download it onto the hard disk drive. The speed, at which you will be downloading, is very high: up to 5 times faster than other software when you download a single file and up to 4 times faster when you download multiple files at a time.

Manual download is not the only option with YouTube Robot. You may as well schedule the download and conversion tasks to be executed automatically, even when you are not around. Downloading is followed by conversion to the format of your choice and uploading videos to a mobile device (if needed). For example, you can plug in iPod, select the video, go to bed, and when you wake up next morning, your iPod will be ready to play new YouTube videos.

Direct download link: http://www.youtuberobot.com/download/utuberobot.exe
Company web-site: http://www.youtuberobot.com

@Billy Pope -- I think the problem you're having has to do with the FLVPlayback component, for some reason they hardcoded it to expect files with a .flv extension.

What you can do rather than use the FLVPlayback component is create a new Video instance and use NetStream and NetConnection objects. There might be an update to the FLVPlayback component available on the Adobe site since they had to fix this behavior for it to work now they added H.264 support and video files other than .flv can be played back.

I tried creating a sample app like the one you have running, but using the FLVPlayback component. I couldn't figure out what URL to pass into the FLVPlayback component. I tried using evt.video, but it said it through an error I think because it's not a direct link to the actual flv. How did you get around this?
