Apologies to my international reader base for not blogging in English, after reading the latest edition of the Dutch “inside digital media” magazine on Flash versus Silverlight I felt compelled to clear up some misconceptions.
[update] the English translation is now available in the comments
With all the talk about the huge difference in geographical pricing for Adobe’s products I wanted to do a quick comparison between what those in the US and those in Europe (or at least Belgium for as far as I can check) pay for some of the different suites.
Master Collection CS4
Full price US: 2499 USD
Full price Europe: 2799 Euro
Master Collection CS4 is 1.6 times as expensive for European customers.
If you haven’t read up on today’s Adobe Creative Suite 4 announcement yet and still want to watch the live stream or attend a user group meeting, you might not want to read on unless you like spoilers. This is my list of favorite new features for the products in the suite I am most interested in.
Flash CS4
■ Timeline model reworked
■ Motion editor (similar to After Effects)
■ Inverse Kinematics (aka bones for shapes, movie clips)
■ New text engine (including right-to-left support)
■ 3D rotation tools (2D objects in 3D space)
Dreamweaver CS4
■ Live view (webkit rendered interactive view of your page)
■ Live code (watch code changes in realtime for AJAX based pages)
■ Code hinting for JavaScript and AJAX libraries
■ Subversion support
Photoshop CS4
■ Rotate canvas
■ Masks panel (easily create masks and tweak settings)
■ Extended depth of field (stack and combine images with a different focus)
■ Content-Aware Scaling (see this video)
Excited all round for the features in this new release, the one major disappointment is seeing international customers getting screwed again with the huge difference in geographical pricing.
For more information on CS4 and lots of video tutorials, be sure to check out the new and improved Adobe TV.
With Adobe Creative Suite 4 getting officially announced tomorrow, I thought it was worth looking back at some video I shot during the sneak peek session at MAX Chicago last year where they first started showing features of the next version of the Flash authoring environment.
Despite some leaked information about CS4 on AppleInsider calling it a “minor update”, I for one am very impressed with what the various product teams have been working on.
I’ll let you judge for yourself, we’ll know more tomorrow on exactly what features made and did not make it in.

I never thought I’d keep anything up for this long but today is the 5th anniversary of this blog!
That comes to 383 posts (or an average of about 1.4 posts a week), 1482 comments/trackbacks and some 65.188 pieces of spam. Back in 1994 I had about 360 hits a month whereas now its grown to an average of 15.000.
To mark this occassion I figured I’d do a little giveaway, prizes include:
Still talking to some other companies, more to come!
To participate, all you have to leave is a video comment on this post using the new Seesmic video comment feature I’ve recently installed.
Anything goes, feel free to talk about what you like about this blog, where there’s room for improvement, heck you can even sing a song or tell a joke. Bonus points for creativity!
Next week, September 21st I’ll post a short list of my favorite video comments and will put up a poll so the community can vote on the winners. The winners will then be announced on Friday September 26th!
If you’ve been following Adobe’s announcements recently you will have heard that September 23th is going to be a pretty special day. Now it just happens that our local Adobe User Group Belgium has an event planned that day.
This is no doubt going to be a great meet up with some interesting sessions and surprises lined up!
If you want to take part and join us in Ghent make sure to register yourself. We think this will be one of our biggest events to date and will likely fill up very soon.
